What’s so special about breast surgery at CPSAA?

You have several options for breast surgery in and around Ann Arbor, so what makes the Center for Plastic Surgery Ann Arbor so special? We can’t list them all, but here are some of our favorites:

1. Most breast augmentations take place right in our office.*

We have a fully accredited surgical facility right in our office. That’s convenience and safety all in one just for our patients! Our state-of-the-art facility is fully accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF). That means our operating room meets the same rigorous standards for cleanliness, equipment maintenance, staff qualification, and ethical practice that you would receive if you were having your breast surgery performed in the hospital.

* If you have a BMI over 30, latex allergy, or sleep apnea, your surgery must be done at the main hospital.

2. Our surgeons are board-certified by the ABPS and members of the ASPS.

The reality is, not all cosmetic surgeons are equally qualified. In fact, some cosmetic surgeons are not board-certified plastic surgeons. Medical jargon gets thrown around a lot on cosmetic and plastic surgery websites which can make it really confusing for patients. A lot of people think that if a physician is advertising their ability to perform procedures to improve your appearance, they must have had a special training in plastic surgery, but that’s just not true.

True plastic surgeons are certified by a single board: the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The ABPS is the ONLY board certification recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialities. Our ASPS Member Surgeons are required to meet these rigorous standards:

  • Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery® (ABPS)
  • Completed at least six years of surgical training following medical school with a minimum of three years of plastic surgery residency training.
  • Passed comprehensive oral and written exams.
  • Trained in all plastic surgery procedures.
  • Operate only in accredited medical facilities.
  • Adhere to a strict code of ethics.
  • Fulfill continuing medical education requirements, including standards and innovations in patient safety.

Sometimes you may see doctors advertising board-certification by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS). This board-certification is not nearly as rigorous as the ABPS/ASPS. For example, only a single year of training is required for ABCS certification vs six years of training for ABPS certification and ASPS membership.

Dr. Daniel Sherick*, Dr. Richard Beil*, and Dr. David Hing* are all ASPS member surgeons and our newest surgeon, Dr. Ali Charafeddine is pursuing the rigorous standards of ASPS membership.

3. Our office is located at a hospital for your peace-of-mind.

We pride ourselves in positive outcomes for our patients. But we are also prepared incase of an unexpected emergency. As mentioned above, many of our surgeries take place right in our state-of-the-art surgical facility in our office. Our office is located on the campus of St. Joe’s Hospital so in the extremely rare occurrence of an emergency, we can have you in a fully-equipped hospital with physicians in every speciality in mere minutes.

4. Your breast surgery is an out-patient procedure — you go home the same day!

While recovery for a breast surgery can take a couple of weeks, you can do that recovery from the comfort of your own home. You’ll be able to go home the same day as your procedure and follow-up appointments will be scheduled to make sure you’re healing appropriately.

Breast surgeries offered by the surgeons at the Center for Plastic Surgery Ann Arbor include Breast Enlargement (Augmentation), Breast Lift, Breast Reduction, Male Breast Reduction, and Breast Reconstruction.
