A more flattering male physique
Gynecomastia is a condition in which male breast tissue swells due to hormones. While this most commonly occurs during puberty, it can also occur due to aging, medications, and health conditions. Not only can male breast reduction improve a man’s physique, it can also boost their self-confidence.
Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.
Healthy males who are non-smokers at a relatively normal weight can often benefit from this procedure. It is important that patient’s breasts have fully developed before undergoing male breast reduction. A consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons can help to determine whether this procedure is right for you. In some cases, our plastic surgeon may recommend being evaluated by an endocrinologist first to identify any possible causes of a hormone imbalance, which can cause gynecomastia.
Depending on the type of breast tissue present, excess breast tissue or fat can be removed with liposuction, excision or a combination of both. If excess tissue is mostly made up of fatty tissue and there is sufficient skin elasticity, liposuction alone may be used. Glandular tissue and skin will be removed if necessary. More severe cases of gynecomastia may cause the areolae to stretch, in which case the size and position of the areolae can be improved. A typical incision is made either on the edge of the areola or in the armpit area. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation.
Our board-certified plastic surgeons have more than 50 years of combined experience in all facets of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. As a qualified and compassionate team, they share a goal of providing a safe and rewarding plastic surgery experience while creating exceptional results worthy of your trust.
You will go home with specific instructions. A compression vest or chest wrapping is usually indicated for a week or two after surgery to help reduce swelling. Sutures are usually removed 7-14 days after surgery.
Additional procedures that may enhance the result:
Male breast reduction surgery is occasionally covered by some, but not all, insurance companies. Pre-approval or denial is obtained from your insurance carrier before surgery. The patient is responsible for any payment not covered by insurance.
