Laser Skin Resurfacing

At Center for Plastic Surgery Ann Arbor, we offer a range of laser skin resurfacing treatment options using the Sciton® Contour TRL® device (Contour Tunable Resurfacing Laser). This state-of-the-art laser is safe for all skin types and is typically used on the face, neck, chest, and hands.

Treatment Options

Whether you want to gently brighten your skin or correct significant signs of aging or sun damage, we have a treatment for you. The options are listed below from least to most aggressive—although the strength of the individual treatments can be adjusted as well.

NanoLaserPeel™

This option is deeper than microdermabrasion and peels, but the gentlest of our laser resurfacing treatments.

• Corrects: Fine lines and wrinkles, brown pigment (sunspots, freckles, age spots), superficial scars
• Treatment time: 60 minutes
• Discomfort level: None
• Recovery: 2 to 3 days of downtime
• Results: Slightly smoother, more evenly colored skin

MicroLaserPeel®

This option provides superficial resurfacing that is deeper than the NanoLaserPeel.

• Corrects: Fine lines and wrinkles, brown pigment (sunspots, freckles, age spots), keratoses, superficial scars
• Treatment time: 60 minutes
• Discomfort level: None or topical anesthetic with deeper treatments
• Recovery: 3 to 5 days of downtime. Skin looks “frosty” before peeling in a few days. May have mild redness and swelling.
• Results: Noticeably smoother, more evenly colored, reduced wrinkles

ProFractional™ Therapy

This option provides fractional resurfacing through thousands of pinpoint beams of laser energy that create tiny injuries and initiate the natural healing process. In addition, collagen production increases for gradual firming.

• Corrects: Fine lines and wrinkles, brown pigment (sunspots, freckles, age spots), superficial scars
• Treatment time: 75 minutes
• Discomfort level: Topical or local anesthetic depending on aggressiveness
• Recovery: 2 to 5 days of downtime. Skin looks and feels mildly sunburned at first. Most patients feel ready to apply makeup and return to work within 3 days.
• Results: General tightening with collagen growth over the next 3 months

Contour TRL™

This option provides deep resurfacing by removing an outer layer of skin so that it is replaced with a new layer of fresh, younger-looking skin. Collagen is stimulated as well for increased firmness and elasticity.

• Corrects: Fine and deep lines and wrinkles (even around the mouth and eyes), brown pigment (sunspots, freckles, age spots), scars, actinic keratoses, poor skin tone and texture
• Treatment time: 90 minutes
• Discomfort level: Topical, local anesthetic or sedation depending on aggressiveness
• Recovery: 7 to 14 days of downtime for milder treatments; longer for more aggressive treatments. Skin looks and feels sunburned at first. Makeup can be applied in about a week.
• Results: Noticeably smoother, firmer, and more evenly colored. Wrinkles fade. Improvements continue over the next 3 months as new collagen is produced.

We can provide even more complete rejuvenation by combining treatments. For example, we can first perform a MicroLaserPeel to address concerns on the surface of the skin and follow it with ProFractional Therapy to stimulate collagen production for noticeable firming and tightening over time.

What to Expect

While our laser resurfacing treatments differ in intensity, they are performed in a similar manner. After numbing the targeted skin (if needed), it is gently cleansed and safety shields are placed over your eyes. Next, the laser handpiece is smoothed over the skin as flashes of laser energy are released.

You will be given instructions for aftercare that are specific to your treatment. It is important to stay out of direct sunlight until your skin has healed. We recommend always wearing high-quality sunscreen that is at least SPF 30.
